Markets got a jolt after Donald Trump said the U.S. is now in talks with what he called a “new, more reasonable” regime in Iran.

That alone would’ve been enough to spark a relief rally.

But the rest of the message made things a lot more complicated.

Relief… With a Warning Attached

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the U.S. is engaged in “serious discussions” aimed at ending military operations. It’s the first time there’s been a public suggestion that Iran’s leadership may have changed since the conflict began weeks ago.

That’s a big deal. A potential shift in power usually signals a path toward de-escalation.

But the tone didn’t stay soft for long.

In the same post, Trump demanded the Strait of Hormuz be reopened immediately — and warned that if talks fail, the U.S. could strike critical infrastructure, including oil facilities, power plants, and even desalination sites.

So while one part of the message pointed to peace, the other hinted at escalation.

And markets had to process both at once.

Crypto Reacts First

Crypto didn’t hesitate.

Bitcoin pushed higher, climbing to around $67,500, while Ethereum led the move with stronger gains. Solana and XRP followed, adding modest upside as well.

The move wasn’t explosive — but it was enough to flip short-term sentiment.

More importantly, it triggered a wave of liquidations.

Shorts Get Caught Offside

As prices ticked higher, traders betting on downside started getting squeezed.

Over the past 24 hours, roughly $340 million in positions were liquidated, with the vast majority coming from shorts. In just one hour, over $9 million in short positions were wiped out, compared to almost nothing on the long side.

One large BTC trade on Bybit alone accounted for nearly $10 million.

That kind of imbalance tells you a lot about positioning going into the move — traders were leaning bearish, and the market moved just enough to punish that.

Still Not a Clean Signal

Despite the bounce, this isn’t a straightforward “risk-on” moment.

The headline itself is split in two directions. On one side, you’ve got talks, progress, and the possibility of a new regime. On the other, you’ve got explicit threats against critical infrastructure if negotiations break down.

That’s not easy for markets to price.

It creates a situation where every new update could swing sentiment quickly — one headline toward peace, the next toward escalation.

Bigger Picture Still Uncertain

Even after the move, the broader trend hasn’t really changed.

Bitcoin is still down on the week, and the overall market remains cautious. The rally feels more like a reaction to positioning and headlines than a shift in underlying confidence.

For now, traders are watching the same thing:

Do these talks actually go somewhere — or does this turn into the next phase of escalation?

Because depending on that answer, the next move probably won’t be small.
