Larry Fink doesn’t usually deal in hype. But this time, the comparison was hard to miss.

In his latest annual letter, the BlackRock CEO suggested that tokenization could reshape finance in much the same way the internet transformed communication — not overnight, but steadily, and then all at once.

Not a Crypto Pitch — A System Upgrade

Fink’s argument isn’t really about crypto speculation. It’s about infrastructure.

He framed tokenization as a way to modernize how markets actually work — the plumbing behind investing. Right now, moving ownership of assets can still be slow, expensive, and fragmented.

Put those assets on digital rails, and things change.

Issuing a bond, trading a fund, even owning a slice of infrastructure — all of it could become faster and cheaper if ownership is recorded on digital ledgers instead of stitched together across legacy systems.

That’s the core idea.

The Bigger Problem He’s Pointing At

But the more interesting part of the letter wasn’t the tech — it was the motivation behind it.

Fink made it clear he thinks the current system isn’t working for a lot of people.

“Capitalism is working — just not for enough people,” he wrote.

In his view, most of the gains over the past decades have gone to people who already own assets, while a large part of the population has been left out of market growth entirely.

Tokenization, in that context, isn’t just efficiency. It’s access.

Turning Wallets Into Investment Accounts

One of his more practical ideas is pretty simple: take something people already use — digital wallets — and expand what they can do.

Today, a wallet might hold money or stablecoins. In Fink’s version of the future, it could also hold tokenized bonds, ETFs, or fractional ownership in things like private credit or infrastructure.

He put it in plain terms: billions of people already have digital wallets. If those same tools could be used to invest as easily as sending a payment, the barrier to entry drops dramatically.

That’s where he sees the real shift.

Still Early — But Moving Fast

Fink compared where tokenization is today to the internet in the mid-90s.

Not dominant yet. Not fully trusted. But clearly building toward something bigger.

And importantly, he doesn’t see it replacing traditional finance. The goal, at least from his perspective, is to connect the two — gradually, but deliberately.

That’s why he also emphasized the need for regulation: clear rules around investor protection, identity, and counterparty risk.

No rails, no trust. No trust, no adoption.

BlackRock Is Already Deep In

This isn’t just theory for BlackRock.

Fink pointed to the firm’s growing footprint in digital assets — roughly $150 billion tied to the space in different forms. That includes tokenized funds, stablecoin-related reserves, and exchange-traded products.

Their tokenized liquidity fund is already the largest of its kind.

So when he talks about tokenization, it’s not from the sidelines.

A Bigger Shift Than It Looks

Zoom out, and the message is broader than just markets.

Fink also touched on rising debt, pressure on public finances, and the limits of traditional institutions to fund large-scale economic changes — from energy to AI to manufacturing.

In that environment, he’s essentially arguing that finance needs new rails.

Tokenization is one of the bets.

Not because it’s trendy — but because, in his view, the current system is starting to show its age.

Whether that comparison to the internet holds up is still an open question.

But BlackRock is clearly positioning itself as if it will.
