What if the market knew about a military strike… before the headlines did?

That’s the question shaking crypto Twitter right now.

Some people made a lot of money betting that the US would attack Iran on February 28. Six new accounts on a site called Polymarket made around $1.2 million from these bets. What's really interesting is that they made these bets just hours before some big explosions happened in Tehran. The timing of all this is pretty suspicious and has definitely raised some eyebrows. It's not every day that people make bets like this and then something big happens just a few hours later.

The $1.2M “Prediction”

It seems like most of the wallets got their money in just a day before the attack happened. These wallets didn't have any history of trading - no random bets or anything like that. They just made one move: buying "Yes" shares in a contract that asked if the U.S. would strike Iran by February 28, 2026.

Then boom - the strikes happened.

Someone bought over 560,000 shares for about $0.108 each. When the deal was done, they got around $560,000. Another person bought almost 150,000 shares for $0.20 each and made a six-figure profit. They did really well, making a lot of money from their investment. The first person's payout was huge, close to $560,000, which is a big return on their investment. The second person also did well, walking away with a lot of money. It just goes to show that investing can be really profitable if you make the right choices.

All six accounts were created this month.

Coincidence? Maybe. But the clustering tells a story.

Markets React Fast - Bitcoin Down, Oil Up

When word of the strikes got out, the markets reacted right away.

Bitcoin slid. Oil-linked futures on Hyperliquid jumped. Traders priced in geopolitical risk within minutes.

And here’s the twist: the Polymarket contract had already seen massive positioning. Nearly $90 million in volume flowed through the Feb. 28 strike market alone. Since December, related strike-date markets pulled in over $529 million.

Prediction markets aren’t small side bets anymore. They’re liquidity hubs.

But when information leaks early? Things get messy.

Regulators Are Watching

This isn’t the first time insider concerns have hit prediction platforms.

Rival exchange Kalshi - which is regulated by the CFTC - recently suspended and fined two users for insider trading. One case involved a TV show insider betting on outcomes. Another penalized a political candidate who wagered on his own race.

The CFTC has already warned that insider trading on event contracts may violate U.S. law. Exchanges, regulators say, are the first line of defence.

Polymarket, however, operates offshore. Identity checks aren’t as strict. That makes tracing real-world actors harder.

The Bigger Question

Prediction markets have a way of bringing things to light. They can reveal the truth before it's officially announced. That's what makes them so powerful.

When it comes down to making a profit, having inside information can be a big help, but it's not always clear what's fair and what's not. The difference between being a smart trader and an insider can get pretty fuzzy.

This is a warning for young traders and those who have grown up with cryptocurrency. Just because something is open and honest on the blockchain doesn't mean everything is fair in the real world.

It's just not clear who was aware of what information and at what point in time they knew it.
