Let’s be honest.

Most people treat stablecoins like the safe corner of crypto. You park your money there. You breathe. Nothing crazy happens.

One dollar in. One dollar out. End of story.

Except… that story skips a few chapters.

Lately, growth has cooled a bit. Feels quieter than the hype cycle days. But if you look at forecasts, they’re still huge. Trillions huge. Banks and officials are talking about stablecoins becoming core financial plumbing within a few years.

And once something becomes plumbing, cracks matter.

Everyone Talks About Reserves. That’s Not the Full Picture.

Whenever stablecoins are discussed, the first question is always: “What backs them?”

Cash? Short-term Treasuries? Gold? Bitcoin?

Tether has been criticised for holding assets that might swing in value. Ratings agencies don’t love that. Fair enough. If reserves drop, the peg could wobble.

But here’s the part that doesn’t get enough attention.

Even if a stablecoin held only short-term US Treasuries - the boring, safe stuff - that doesn’t automatically guarantee smooth redemptions.

Why?

Because assets are one thing. Liquidity under stress is another.

Those are not identical.

What Happens When Everyone Wants Out?

Imagine a rough market day. Stocks sliding. Crypto red candles everywhere. Twitter… sorry, X… full panic mode.

Stablecoin holders decide to redeem. Not slowly. All at once.

Issuers then have to sell Treasuries to raise dollars. Sounds simple in theory. In practice, they can’t just dump them directly into some magical infinite pool of buyers.

Broker-dealers sit in the middle of Treasury markets. They match buyers and sellers. When things are calm, no one notices them.

When things aren’t calm? They become choke points.

Remember March 2020? Even the US Treasury market had liquidity issues. Bid-ask spreads widened. Selling large amounts quickly wasn’t frictionless.

Now layer a stablecoin redemption wave on top of that.

If selling slows, even slightly, and the market price of the coin slips below $1 - say $0.998 - people notice. Screenshots spread. Doubt creeps in.

And once doubt enters, redemptions accelerate.

That feedback loop doesn’t need much to start. Just a crack.

“Just Give Them Access to the Fed”

Some argue stablecoin issuers should be able to borrow directly from the Federal Reserve during stress. That would ease the bottleneck.

Sure. It would.

But let’s not pretend that comes without trade-offs.

Access to the Fed usually means tighter regulation. Capital requirements. Closer supervision. Basically, you start looking a lot like a bank.

Crypto firms built their brands around being not that.

So there’s tension. Big, structural tension.

And Then There’s the Code (Yeah, That Too)

Traditional markets aren’t the only variable.

Stablecoins live on blockchains. They rely on smart contracts. And smart contracts are written by humans. Humans make mistakes.

Logic flaws can exist. Bridges between blockchains can fail. These aren’t theoretical risks.

Last year, Paxos accidentally minted $300 trillion worth of PYUSD. It fixed the error quickly. Still, activity paused, and the price briefly dipped below $1.

Minutes were enough.

In crypto, time compresses. Confidence moves fast.

Add Politics to the Mix

US banks aren’t thrilled about how some stablecoin firms operate. There’s ongoing friction around yield payments and regulatory gaps. Lawmakers are still arguing over frameworks.

So now we’re not just talking about market risk or technical risk.

We’re talking about regulatory risk layered on top.

That’s a lot of moving pieces for something branded as “stable.”

So What’s the Real Weakness?

It’s a dependency.

Stablecoins depend on deep Treasury liquidity. They depend on broker-dealers functioning smoothly. They depend on bug-free code. They depend on political clarity. And they depend - maybe most of all - on collective belief.

That’s not fragility. But it’s not invincibility either.

Stability isn’t a static property. It’s something tested under pressure.

And the real question isn’t whether stablecoins are backed today.

It’s what happens when everyone decides to test that backup at the same time.

That’s the part people don’t always think about.

Until they have to.
