In Taiwan, a big case of money laundering has come to light, and it's all connected to a cryptocurrency scam that was being run from Cambodia. The people in charge have now charged 62 individuals in relation to this huge operation.

According to prosecutors, a huge amount of money - $339 million - was moved through Taiwan by a network, but they tried to hide where it came from. They used fake companies, bought expensive things, and made secret money transfers to cover their tracks.

The case is one of the largest crackdowns tied to Southeast Asia’s growing crypto scam industry.

Alleged Mastermind and Criminal Network

The people who have been charged include Chen Zhi, the chairman of Prince Group, who the prosecutors claim was a key player in setting up the whole scheme. It's worth noting that Prince Group has already been labeled a transnational criminal organization by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Chen was taken into custody in Cambodia at the beginning of this year, and then sent back to China.

The authorities in Taiwan have taken action against a number of companies, a total of 13, that they believe were involved in helping a criminal network operate. It's claimed that these companies played a key role in managing and coordinating the network's activities. Apparently, the organization used Taiwan as a way to handle their finances, making it easier for them to process and hide the money they made from their crimes.

Officials have already taken control of around $174 million of the funds.

Laundering Through Businesses and Luxury Assets

Investigators say the network used several methods to hide the source of the money.

These included:

* Shell companies to move funds across borders

* Underground remittance networks

* Online gambling platforms

* Purchases of luxury goods, sports cars, and real estate

Prosecutors say Taiwanese nationals were recruited to help move and disguise the funds, which they claim disrupted the country’s financial system and damaged its international reputation.

Links to “Pig Butchering” Crypto Scams

This case is connected to a bigger problem of scams, known as “pig butchering” scams, that are happening all over Southeast Asia.

These schemes typically begin with social engineering—scammers build relationships with victims online and convince them to invest in cryptocurrency through fake platforms. Once funds are deposited, the criminals seize control and disappear.

It's been said that a lot of these scams are being run from secret locations in Cambodia and Myanmar. Apparently, the people working there are often forced to take part in these schemes against their will.

Global Crackdown Intensifying

Governments worldwide are ramping up efforts to dismantle these networks.

In 2025, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned multiple entities linked to scam compounds in the region. At the same time, U.S. authorities filed a massive civil forfeiture complaint involving 127,271 BTC, then valued at around $15 billion.

Recently, a team of experts from around the world who are working together to stop scam centers made a big announcement. They said they had taken control of or frozen a huge amount of cryptocurrency, worth about $580 million.

Security researchers say the threat continues to grow. Blockchain analytics firms estimate tens of thousands of criminal groups now operate globally, with billions of dollars in fraud exposure linked to pig butchering scams.

A Growing Challenge for Crypto

The indictment highlights how sophisticated these networks have become.

By combining traditional money laundering tactics with cryptocurrency and online manipulation, organized crime groups have created large-scale fraud operations that span multiple countries.

Authorities say breaking those networks will require closer international cooperation—and faster tracking of illicit crypto flows.

The situation in Taiwan is a perfect example of just how big this problem has gotten.
