Bitwise: Ethereum Isn’t Trading on Fundamentals — It’s Following Bitcoin

A new report from Bitwise Asset Management is challenging one of the most common assumptions in crypto: that Ethereum’s price reflects its real-world usage and growth.

According to their data, that’s not really the case.

Instead, Ethereum is still mostly trading like a “Bitcoin proxy” — meaning its price moves are largely driven by Bitcoin, not by its own fundamentals.

The core finding (and it’s pretty blunt)

Bitwise analyzed years of data going back to 2018 and found something striking:

Correlation coefficient: ~0.99
Bitcoin explains about 65% of ETH’s price movements

That’s a huge number.

It basically means that, week to week, Ethereum isn’t leading — it’s following.

So what about fundamentals?

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Ethereum has actually had a strong few years in terms of real progress:

Growth in stablecoins and tokenized assets
Increasing institutional interest
Expanding ecosystem and usage

But according to Bitwise, those things don’t move the price as much as people think.

Even metrics like:

active addresses
network activity
revenue generation

…had relatively small impact in their model.

In fact, revenue was removed entirely at one point because it looked more like noise than signal.

What does matter (besides Bitcoin)

Bitcoin dominates — but it’s not the only factor.

Bitwise identified a few secondary drivers:

1. Financial conditions

Broader macro environment (like liquidity and interest rates) had a noticeable effect.

Average impact: ~11%
At peak moments: up to ~40%

2. ETF / investment flows

These mattered consistently, even if less dramatically.

Average impact: ~10%
Can spike to ~40% in certain periods

3. Network activity

Things like active addresses do matter — just less than expected.

Average impact: ~6%
Occasionally rises during strong usage cycles

When things get extreme, ETH just mirrors BTC

In volatile periods, the relationship becomes even stronger.

For example:

During parts of 2025, Ethereum behaved like a leveraged Bitcoin trade
In the post-FTX crash of 2022, Bitcoin explained up to 90% of ETH’s price movement

At that point, fundamentals basically didn’t matter at all.

It was all about liquidity and market direction.

Are there exceptions?

Yes — but they’re rare.

Bitwise pointed to moments like the 2021 NFT boom, when Ethereum kept rising even after Bitcoin peaked. That was driven by a surge in on-chain activity.

But these periods tend to be short-lived, not the norm.

The “Ethereum paradox”

This leads to a pretty interesting conclusion.

Ethereum today is:

one of the most widely used blockchain networks
dominant in stablecoins and tokenization
increasingly relevant for institutions

And yet…

👉 Its price is still mostly driven by external forces — especially Bitcoin.

Bitwise calls this a kind of paradox:
A fundamentally strong network that isn’t being priced like one.

What this means for investors

If this analysis holds, it changes how you think about ETH:

Watching Ethereum metrics alone isn’t enough
Bitcoin’s direction still matters more than anything else
Macro conditions can outweigh on-chain growth

In simple terms:
You might think you’re investing in Ethereum’s ecosystem — but in practice, you’re often just riding Bitcoin’s wave.

The bottom line

Ethereum isn’t broken. It’s just not being priced the way many people expect.

At least for now, market structure and macro forces are louder than fundamentals.

And until that changes, ETH may continue to move less like a tech platform — and more like a high-beta version of Bitcoin.
