Crypto’s infrastructure race has entered a new phase. This time, the competition isn’t about faster transactions or lower fees — it’s about perpetual futures exchanges.

Across the industry, blockchains are launching or supporting their own perpetual decentralised exchanges (perp DEXs). The idea is simple: if derivatives drive most of crypto’s trading activity, hosting those markets could bring liquidity, traders, and serious volume to a network.

However, if we look back at what has happened in the past, we can see that it's not usually the case that everything gets an equal share of the attention. More often than not, just a few really popular places end up getting most of it, and the rest are left with very little.

Why Derivatives Matter So Much

If you look at the numbers, derivatives dominate crypto trading.

Let's look at some numbers to get an idea of what's going on in the trading world. Recently, we've seen that the volume of Bitcoin spot trading is around 55,000 BTC. But when it comes to derivatives trading, the volume is way higher, topping over 500,000 BTC in the same time period. This means that leveraged markets are moving almost ten times more volume than traditional spot trading. It's a big difference, and it shows just how much more action is happening in the derivatives market compared to spot trading.

That’s why perpetual futures exchanges are becoming core infrastructure.

According to Nina Rong, executive director of growth at BNB Chain, derivatives markets bring more than just traders.

When these players operate on a blockchain, they boost overall activity across the entire ecosystem.

Blockchains Are Building Their Own Perp DEXs

Because of that, many networks are now racing to launch their own derivatives platforms.

The strategy is straightforward: host the trading activity, and the liquidity may follow.

For instance, BNB Chain has Aster, which is now one of the biggest perpetual decentralised exchanges, or DEXs, in terms of open interest, as reported by DeFiLlama. Right now, it's just behind Hyperliquid, a decentralised derivatives exchange that's growing really fast.

Other ecosystems are taking an even more direct approach — building platforms themselves rather than waiting for developers to arrive.

A good example of this is Decibel, a special kind of exchange called a perpetual DEX, which started working on the Aptos mainnet back in February.

According to Brylee Whatley, head of the Decibel Foundation, many blockchain teams believe they are best positioned to build key applications on their own networks.

They have a deep understanding of their own infrastructure, knowing it inside and out, which is something that can't be easily replicated by others.

Launching a DEX Doesn’t Guarantee Liquidity

Just because you start a derivatives exchange, it doesn't mean people will automatically start trading on it.

That’s because liquidity tends to cluster around platforms that already have it.

Stephan Lutz, CEO of BitMEX, says derivatives markets rely heavily on market makers and risk management systems. Those participants usually prefer exchanges that already have a proven track record.

And that dynamic creates a powerful network effect.

Traders want deep liquidity.

Market makers want active traders.

Both groups move toward platforms where activity already exists.

Once momentum builds in one place, it becomes difficult for competitors to catch up.

TradFi Shows the Same Pattern

This phenomenon isn’t unique to crypto.

For a long time, the way people have handled money and investments has stayed pretty much the same.

When electronic trading platforms expanded in the 1990s, dozens of exchanges appeared. Over time, however, liquidity reconsolidated around a few dominant venues.

Today:

CME leads much of the US futures market

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) dominates energy derivatives

Eurex handles major European index futures

It's easy to see what happens: when markets start, they can be all over the place, but as time goes on, the money tends to flow towards the systems that work the best.

Centralised Exchanges Still Hold an Edge

Right now, big companies that control everything are still in charge of most trading that involves derivatives.

Exchanges like Binance, OKX, Bybit, and Deribit still control much of the Bitcoin and Ether derivatives market.

There are several reasons for this.

Centralised platforms typically offer:

Faster order execution

More advanced risk systems

Deeper liquidity pools

Greater trading infrastructure

When it comes to trading, some people think that centralised exchanges are better because they can keep things private. Sidrah Fariq, who is in charge of retail sales at Deribit, says that this is especially important for big traders who want to keep their business quiet.

On-chain platforms, by contrast, still face technical limitations. Block times can create delays, which sometimes lead to slippage or slower execution.

The Case for Decentralised Derivatives

Despite those challenges, supporters of onchain exchanges believe decentralized derivatives offer something unique.

Transparency.

On-chain order books are visible and verifiable. Traders can see exactly how orders are processed and matched. Instead of relying on internal exchange systems, the rules are enforced directly by the blockchain.

For many crypto-native traders, that transparency matters.

It removes questions about hidden order routing, preferential execution, or internal market-making practices.

A “U-Shaped” Future for Liquidity

So what happens next?

Some analysts believe derivatives markets will follow a U-shaped pattern across ecosystems.

In the early phase, new exchanges attract strong attention. Traders experiment, liquidity flows in, and activity surges.

But over time, momentum slows.

Professional traders begin consolidating their activity on platforms where capital can be deployed efficiently across multiple markets.

If liquidity spreads too thin across many exchanges, trading conditions worsen — spreads widen and volatility increases.

As time goes on, things start to focus around a few really strong platforms that stand out from the rest.

The Real Question for Blockchains

When it comes to blockchains that are competing with each other, the main problem they face is finding ways to stand out from one another.

If every network launches a similar perpetual DEX with identical products, liquidity could become fragmented across ecosystems.

Some networks are special because they give people chances to trade in new ways, offer good rewards, or have better systems that make trading easier.

To really achieve success, you can't just replicate the same old platform in every location.

The ones that will probably come out on top are the stores that have something unique to offer, something that sets them apart from the rest.

Derivatives Are Becoming Core Crypto Infrastructure

No matter what happens in the end, one thing is for sure.

Derivatives trading is no longer just another part of crypto markets.

It’s becoming foundational infrastructure.

Perpetual futures influence where liquidity flows, how traders hedge risk, and which blockchains attract the most activity.

As different networks try to be the place where people buy and sell, the fight for who will control the future of crypto trading is changing. It's not just about the tokens or the transactions anymore; it's about who has the best derivatives platforms. This is where the real battle is happening now.
